Sneak Preview Windows Vista

With Microsoft working hard to get Windows Vista out the door as soon as they can without compromising security, they released the beta 1 version to developers and IT personnel recently. They boast a new set of security features to help IT & home users, but again 3rd party vendors will be faced with a Darwinian proposition: evolve or die. Here is a short review of these security features and how they impact 3rd parties:

User Account Protection features: nothing major there as competition goes, but we could see 3rd parties build tools to better leverage this feature.

Windows Service Hardening: much needed, not much to worry about for 3rd parties.

Anti-malware features: this is where the traditionnal players (Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, CA) need to work hard to compete. If MS includes these features standard, consumers won't pay up as they did in the past. SMB will most likely give these features a run before renewing with current vendors. Spyware detection software is hot right now in the enterprise space like in the retail space, so MS may have a category killer candidate.

Advanced data protection technologies: really cool, really needed. Only a few 3rd parties will likely suffer.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 7: after releasing patch after patch after patch, Firefox was the answer for many users and I would expect some to go back to IE. Spoofing and phishing tool will be included, but I would expect hackers to find ways to circumvent these methods quickly, so 3rd parties may benefit here.

Network Access Protection: very nice, no competition on the market that I know of for this. It's a great feature set to have and should have been in XP SP2.

firewalllinks: same threat as XP for 3rd parties, they need to offer a better value proposition

I think the greatest threats will be availability in the OS and integration. Microsoft has smart people on the payroll so we should expect a lot out of Vista for security. Looking forward to try the beta!
