IBM the defacto IT Outsourcer for the Indian Telecom Industry

First it was Bharati Airtel, than recently there was the IDEA deal, well now looks like HUTCH is also going down the same path, Hutchison Essar is now looking at outsourcing its IT operations to technology giant IBM. The deal could be valued between $1.4 billion and $1.6 billion, sources close to the development told ET.

If it comes through, the contract will be the largest-ever outsourcing deal to be signed by an Indian operator. It will also be the biggest win in India for Big Blue, which saw 37% growth in revenues here last year. Sources said the contract has been discussed with Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin. The company had picked up a 67% stake in Mumbai-based Hutch last month. "Mr Sarin is in favour of outsourcing as it will allow the company to focus on its core business," sources added.

  1. Thank you for intresting article

  2. baby says:

I think it’s odd that Indian continuously choose to go with IBM, although considering their track record, I don’t actually find it that odd that companies would want to do business with them. IBM technology tends to be much more reliable than any other type of technology that I’ve ever dealt with. However, I do think it’s dangerous to go with IBM since they have already stopped supporting technology they came out with in 1995 and have no way of retrieving any useful information or help for people who are still using that technology. I believe that it is important to continue offering relevant support for at least 20 years and I don’t think it’s in the best interest of a company to outsource technology when IBM will very soon stop supporting what they’ve built. Why is it that Indian companies are so attracted to IBM? Is it because of reliability and do not they care about future support?

  3. I wish we’re IBM. This looks like a huge and challenging project.

  4. The money is surely worth it; considering that the job is for IBM. I wonder why IBM. Were there any alternative that will give almost the same output in terms of quality but with lesser expense?
