Google Apps Premier edition gets secured

Google announced today that they have completed their integration of Postini's e-mail compliance and security features to the Premier edition of their Google Apps service. Postini was acquired only last month and so this has to be some sort of record for feature integration out of an acquisition.

I think this is a good fit for Premier Apps and a good buy for Google, shoring up an area in which their corporate offering showed considerable weakness. I think the most advantage will probably accrue to current Postini customers, however, who get a free six month trial of Premier Apps out of the deal (details on Postini's home page). It remains to be seen, however, if this sort of acquisition and backfilling strategy is going to create more comfort for corporate CIOs looking to outsource services... it all may work just fine, but when I think of services that are sort of thrown together out of a half-dozen corporate acquisitions, I think of all the potential problems they might have when stitched into a combined offering.

Google's press release on the service can be found here.
