Thats right Google desktop search for the enterprise was just released as a product, that can find files and e-mail messages on business computers, an effort to have its software installed on corporate personal computers and thereby guiding more users to the the google site for search.

It is intended for companies that do not permit employees to use Google's existing file-search tool because of security concerns, said Dave Girouard, a general manager in Google's enterprise group.

Why the new enterprise features are a big deal for IT administrators:

  • Centrally control user features and preferences
  • Encrypt all user data and search index files
  • Easily deploy using the included installation package
  • Test new versions before distributing
But are the security enhancements enough to sway security-conscious corporations?
"That's the 64 thousand dollar question," said Eric Peterson, senior analyst at JupiterResearch.

"Enterprise workers have information retrieval problems. This combo of the Google Search appliancelinks, plus Desktop Search [for Enterprise], plus Google.com is a compelling way to discover info that may otherwise go undiscovered," Peterson said.
