Apple blessing the iPhone for enterprise?

So hinted Apple CFO Pete Oppenheimer yesterday during a Morgan Stanley technology webcast, according to CIO Magazine.

From the article:

"Tomorrow we're going to talk a bit about the iPhone in the enterprise at our event on campus," said Peter Oppenheimer, chief financial officer of Apple, via a webcast of the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference. "We believe the iPhone is great for all parts of the market, including the enterprise."

This comes in concert with the release of an official Apple SDK for the iPhone, both moves signifying a subtle but important change of course for Apple with the product. From a closed, carefully managed consumer device, the company seems to have realized the potential for significant business adoption could be just around the corner with a little more openness. Although the traditional excuse for locking down such consumer devices is to protect the consumer experience, the technique has also precluded serious development by third parties of business-oriented applications and compatability widgets. Apple can't possibly provide everything the market might demand in that regard; a broadly available SDK and third-party application support are their only realistic avenues.

More information to come after today's announcements.
